Getting Started

Energy & Driving Reports

Teams

Your Utility Bill & Account

Sign Up

  1. Before you start add "challenge@coolcalifornia.org" to your e-mail contacts so that your activation e-mail will not get sent to the spam folder!
  2. Visit the website: coolclimate.berkeley.edu/challenge
  3. On the main menu bar near the top of the page, click "Register"
  4. Fill out the form titled "SIGN UP FOR THE CHALLENGE" with your information
  5. Read the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy which can be found at: coolcalifornia.org/terms-of-use-and-privacy-policy
  6. Check the box under "Some quick legalese" to agree to the terms of use and privacy policy (Note: must be 18 years of age)
  7. Under where it says "Privacy", choose your privacy preferences by selecting one of the buttons
  8. If you would like others to be able to find your profile by using your email address, be sure to check the last box on the page
  9. Click the "Sign Up" button at the very bottom of the page
  10. The next page should confirm that you have successfully submitted your registration. Now check the inbox for the email address you specified during registration for a message from challenge@coolcalifornia.org, titled "Welcome to the CoolCalifornia Challenge!" (Note: If you don't see the email at first, be sure to check that it didn't get sent to the trash/spam folder!)
  11. Click the activation link in the email
  12. Log in with your username and password.

Sign In

  1. Visit the website: coolclimate.berkeley.edu/challenge
  2. Type your username in the username field
  3. Type your password in the password field (Note!: Passwords are case-sensitive)
  4. Click on the "Sign In" button

Take Survey

  1. Visit the website: coolclimate.berkeley.edu/challenge
  2. On the right hand side, under the "Shortcuts heading," find the box titled "Research"
  3. Click on the "Take the Survey" button
  4. Read the "Consent Form" and confirm your consent to participate in the study by clicking the two checkboxes
  5. Click the "Next-Survey" link
  6. Complete the survey by answering all of the questions
  7. When you are finished, click the "Submit Survey" button
  8. Once your survey is complete and submitted, if you visit your profile page then in the top right hand corner you will see the "Research" box will now show you as an "Official Contributor"

Add Profile Picture

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. On the left side of your profile page, underneath the blue default profile picture click on the "add picture" text
  3. Slightly near the bottom and middle of the page, click on the "Browse" button
  4. Select and open your image file (recommended dimensions 100 x 100px, maximum file size 1MB)
  5. On the bottom left side of the page, click on the "Upload Picture" button
  6. (To return to your profile page, click on the word "Profile" in the yellow banner near the top left section of the page)

Change Profile Picture

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. On the left side of your profile page, underneath your current profile picture, click on the "edit picture" text
  3. Click the on the "Choose File" button near the bottom of the page
  4. Select the image file you desire for your new profile picture (recommended dimensions: 100 x 100px, maximum file size 1MB)
  5. On the bottom left side of the page, click on the "Upload Picture" button
  6. (To return to your profile page, click on the word "Profile" in the yellow banner near the top left section of the page)

Change Email Address

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, hover over "Settings" and select "Account" from the dropdown menu. (If you don’t see this text, make sure you are logged in!)
  3. Scroll down to the section titled "Email Settings"
  4. Under where it says "Change Your Email Address", enter the desired email address in the box
  5. Click "Change Email"

Manage E-mail Settings

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, hover over "Settings" and select "Mail Preferences" from the dropdown menu. (If you don’t see this text, make sure you are logged in!)
  3. Check or un-check the boxes corresponding to the types of communications you would like to receive. Un-check all boxes to select the "Opt Out" option, which removes you from any Challenge communication and withdraws you from any raffle drawings.

Change Password

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, hover over "Settings" and select "Account" from the dropdown menu
  3. Underneath the words, "Old Password", type your existing password
  4. Underneath the words, "New Password", type your new password (Note: Passwords are case sensitive and must be at least six characters long)
  5. Underneath the words, "Confirm New Password", re-type your new password
  6. Click the "Change Password" button

Change Privacy Settings

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, hover over "Settings" and select "Privacy" from the dropdown menu
  3. Depending on your privacy preference, click on the button to the left of either "Everyone," "Challenge Participants," or "Only Me" (Note: only one privacy button may be selected at a time.)
  4. Scoll down to the bottom of the page. If you would like other Challenge participants to be able to search for you by e-mail, click the box underneath the heading "Other Options"
  5. Click the "Save Settings" button

Invite Friends

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of your Profile page until you see the "Invite Friends" headline
  3. In the "type e-mail address" box, simply type in the email address of the person whom you'd like to invite to join the Challenge (Note: only one person can be invited at a time.)
  4. Click "Send"
  5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 as many times as you'd like!

Upload Green Button Data

Challenge participants with utilities that participate in the Green Button data initiative may download "Green Button" energy data files and upload them to automatically add all energy data at once.

PG&E Customers - file download

  1. You need to have a My Energy account and an electric SmartMeter™ connected to the network.
    Log in or register for PG&E My Energy.
  2. Log in to My Energy and click on the My
    Usage tab.
  3. Click on the Green Button icon to view download options.
  4. Under the "For developers and third parties (.xml file)" section, select "Export all bill totals"
  5. Click "Export"

SDG&E Customers - file download

  1. Log or Register for an Online SD&GE Account.
  2. Click on the My Energy tab.
  3. Click on My Energy Use underneath the My Energy tab.
  4. Click on Green Button Download My Data at the bottom of the My Energy Use chart.
  5. Select the meter and date range you’re interested in.
  6. Click Export to download.

Challenge file upload

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "My Data & Reports
  3. Below either "Electricity" or "Natural gas" report forms, click the "upload" button under the Green Button header. Select the appropriate file format and upload to the CoolCalifornia site. All data form the green button file will be automatically added to you account.
  4. Click "view all reports" to see report totals and points.

Report Electricity

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "My Data & Reports" (If you don't see this text, make sure you are logged in!)
  3. Scroll down to the section titled "Electricity". From here, you can enter your electricity usage from your utility bills. (Note: Be sure to start with your oldest bill first since bills can only be entered in chronological order!)
  4. In the first box, enter the number of kilowatt hours of electricity your household used, according to the bill you are entering In the second box, enter the start date of the billing period (service dates) for the bill you are entering.
  5. In the third box, type in the end date of the billing period (service dates) for the bill you are entering
  6. Click the "Submit" button

Report Past Electricity

  1. Note: In order for the CoolCalifornia Challenge website to correctly calculate your points, bills can only be entered in chronological order. For example, if you have already entered a bill from February 2014 to March 2014, then you cannot enter any bills before February 2014. To enter data from utility bills dating before the reports that have already been entered, please use the following instructions.
  2. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  3. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "My Data & Reports" (If you don’t see this text, make sure you are logged in!)
  4. Near the top, next to "Report", click the text "See past reports".
  5. Go to the section titled "Electricity"
  6. Remove all bills with a "Bill Start Date" later than the start date of the past bill you wish to enter by clicking "Remove" at the far right of each report
  7. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "My Data & Reports" Scroll down to the section titled "Electricity". From here, you can enter your electricity usage from your utility bills (Note: Be sure to start with your oldest bill first since bills can only be entered in chronological order!)

  3. In the first box, enter the number of therms of natural gas your household used, according to the bill you are entering
  4. In the second box, enter the start date of the billing period (service dates) for the bill you are entering
  5. In the third box, type in the end date of the billing period (service dates) for the bill you are entering
  6. Click the "Submit" button

Report Past Natural Gas

Remove an Electricity Report

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "My Data & Reports" (If you don’t see this text, make sure you are logged in!)
  3. Near the top, next to "Report", click the text "See past reports"
  4. Go to the section titled "Electricity". Remove undesired bills by clicking "Remove" to the far right of the row that the bill is listed in

Remove a Natural Gas Report

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "My Data & Reports" (If you don’t see this text, make sure you are logged in!)
  3. Near the top, next to "Report", click the text "See past reports"
  4. Go to the section titled "Natural Gas". Remove undesired bills by clicking "Remove" to the far right of the row that the bill is listed.

Add a Vehicle

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "My Data & Reports" (If you don’t see this text, make sure you are logged in!)
  3. Scroll down to the section titled "Vehicles and Reporting"
  4. Next to the text "Total Household Vehicles", click "Edit"
  5. Increase the number of "Total Household Vehicles" to that it is equal to the total number ofhousehold vehicles and click "Submit"
  6. If the number of "Total Household Vehicles" increased, a new section titled "Add a Vehicle" will appear. Fill out all required information using the dropdown menus. (Note: If your vehicle is not listed, select the most similar vehicle. As long as the "miles per gallon" rating is accurate, all poitns calculations will be accurate. If you'd like to add your exact vehicle, click "Fill out this form and we’ll get back to you!")
  7. When all of your information is correct, click the "Add Vehicle" button next to the last dropdown menu
  8. Repeat steps 6-7 for all additional vehicles

Remove a Vehicle

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "My Data & Reports" (If you don’t see this text, make sure you are logged in!)
  3. Near the top, next to "Report", click the text "See past reports"
  4. Scroll down to "My Vehicles"
  5. Under the make and model information for the undesired vehicle, click "Permanently delete vehicle." Note! Deleting a vehicle also permanently removes all mileage reports and points associated with the vehicle.

Report Vehicle Odometer Reading

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "My Data & Reports" (Shows automatically if you are logged in.)
  3. Scroll down to the section titled "Vehicles and Reporting"
  4. In the first box, enter the odometer reading for the vehicle you selected.
  5. In the second box, enter the date of the odometer reading. Note! The default date is January 2014, so please double-check the date.
  6. Select the correct vehicle from the dropdown menu.
  7. Click "Submit Mileage Report"

Remove an Odometer Reading Report

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "My Data & Reports" (If you don’t see this text, make sure you are logged in!)
  3. Near the top, next to "Report", click the text "See past reports"
  4. Go to the section titled "Vehicles and Reporting".
  5. Reports may be removed in reverse order starting with the most recent by clicking the "Remove" link to the far right column of the row in which the bill is listed. Note! Removing reports is permanent, deletes any points associated with that report, and old reports cannot be un-deleted. Data must be re-entered if a report is deleted incorrectly.

Add a Green Action Report

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "My Data & Reports" (If you don’t see this text, make sure you are logged in!)
  3. Scroll down to the section titled "Add Green Action Report" located all the way at the bottom
  4. Select the green action you completed from the dropdown menu
  5. Click "Choose File" and select the file of the photo verifying your green action
  6. In the box under "Share your green story!", feel free to describe your green action experience!
  7. Check the boxes near the bottom of the page if you would like to display this green action on your profile and if you would allow this information to be used for Newsletters, Challenge flyers, and the website
  8. Click "Submit"

Remove a Green Action Report

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "My Data & Reports" (If you don’t see this text, make sure you are logged in!)
  3. To the right on the word "Report", click on "See past reports"
  4. Underneath the "Kudo Points" heading, you'll see a list of your Green Action Reports. To the right of the report that you'd like to delete, click "Show details"
  5. Click "Remove kudo report"

Join a Team

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "Teams" (If you don’t see this text, make sure you are logged in!)
  3. Scroll down to the section titled "Join or Start a Team"
  4. If you know the name of the team you wish to join, you can type in a keyword to help find that team and click "Search". If you do not have a specific team in mind, you can view all teams in your city by clicking "Browse All"
  5. For the team you wish to join, click the "Join" button (Note: to view more information on a team, click on the team name)

Form a Team

  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "Teams" (If you don’t see this text, make sure you are logged in!)
  3. Click on the "Create New Team" button
  4. Type in the name of your team and and click "Create"
  5. Note: If your privacy settings are set to "Only Me", then a privacy setting pop-up box will appear. In order to continue with the formation of your team, click "OK"

Invite People to a Team

  • For Team Creators
    1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
    2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "Teams" (If you don’t see this text, make sure you are logged in!)
    3. To the right on your team name, click "manage"
    4. In the "type e-mail" command box, simply type in the email address the person whom you’d like to invite to join your team (Note: only one person can be invited at a time.)
    5. Click the "Send Invite" button
    6. To invite more people to your team, repeat steps 10 and 11
  • For Other Team Members
    1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
    2. From the main menu bar near the top of the page, select "Teams" (If you don’t see this text, make sure you are logged in!)
    3. To the right on your team name, click "manage"
    4. Use the facebook, twitter or e-mail Share buttons to send the team page to your friends. Once they register or log in they will be able to see the "Join Team" link on your group page.

Change Team Name

  • Note: only team captain (the person who created the team) may edit the team name.
  1. Sign in to the CoolCalifornia Challenge
  2. On the main menu bar near the top of the page, click on "Teams"
  3. If you're the team captain (the person who created the team), a link is displayed next to the team name with the title "Edit Team Name"
  4. Click the "Edit Team Name" link and change the name as desired
  5. Click "Save"
  • Unlimited Edits: Team names may be changed by the team captain as many times as desired.
  • Name Nicely: Team names are publicly visible on city team ranking pages
  • Moderation: Teams may be permanently removed from the Challenge site at the discretion of city administrators.

Leave a Team

  • We're still working on this feature. For now, kindly email challenge@coolcalifornia.org with your username (or email used to sign-up), city name, team name, and a request to leave that particular team. Thanks for your patience while we continue to improve our site.
